Dr Will Coulton appointed Carrie Perrodo Fellow in Physics at St Peter’s College

St Peter’s College is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Will Coulton as Carrie Perrodo Fellow in Physics at St Peter’s College and Associate Professor of Physics at the University of Oxford.

Dr Coulton studied Physics just around the corner at Jesus College, Oxford, before completing his PhD at Princeton University. His path into research began with a summer research project at Oxford. This rewarding experience, combined with his passion for physics, inspired him to pursue an academic career. He has worked in a range of academic institutions from the University of Cambridge to the Kavli Institute in Tokyo and the Simons Foundation, New York.

At St Peter’s College, Dr Coulton joins Prof Chris Foot in managing the Physics course, providing undergraduate tutorials across a broad range of topics. At the Department of Physics, he will also provide lectures in cosmology and astrophysics. He looks forward to working with summer undergraduate students and hopes to provide an exciting and stimulating environment that will inspire developing researchers.

Dr Coulton’s area of expertise is Cosmology. He is interested in studying the properties of the Universe, such as its age and composition, and the processes that governing its evolution. He hopes that his work contributes to the development of new insights into the Universe’s earliest moments.

He says,

‘I find this field fascinating as it requires us to face some of the big open questions, such as how our Universe began. Understanding the phenomena in the cosmos requires a diverse range of subjects from physics to chemistry. This means that I am always learning something new!’

Dr Coulton currently holds a Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) Ernest Rutherford Fellowship. This summer, he organised an exhibit at the Royal Society’s Summer Science Exhibition.

In his free time, he enjoys reading, live music and comedy, and running.
