Our Junior Common Room (for undergraduates) and Middle Common Room (for postgraduates) are the vibrant centres of student-led community, activity and culture. JCR and MCR Committees and Representatives liaise between the College and student body, advocate for student priorities and play key roles in both the College and the wider University.

The Junior Common Room (JCR) is the term used to describe two key aspects of College undergraduate life. Firstly, it is a physical space – the Common Room itself – which serves as a social hub in College, while it is also the collective term for all undergraduate students (including visiting students) within St Peter’s College.

Each year a JCR Committee is elected, whose members all have different roles to play both within College and the wider University, whether that be the student Health, Wellbeing and Welfare team, representatives for charities, sports, academic affairs or the much-loved St Peter’s mascot (a red squirrel).

The JCR holds General Meetings which give a chance for undergraduates to make sure their elected committee is doing its job, while it is also used to make democratic decisions on JCR issues, for example on funding for events or the JCR’s opinion on wider University issues.

Middle Common Room (MCR)

The Middle Common Room (MCR) is the term used to describe two key aspects of College postgraduate life. Firstly, it is a physical space – the Common Room itself – which serves as a social hub in College, while it is also the collective term for all postgraduate students in St Peter’s College.

Each year an MCR Committee is elected to represent the interests of the MCR within the College and University. They also organise social events, cultural events and academic events. Example initiatives and opportunities:

  • Book club
  • Film club
  • Break and Bake
  • Wine and cheese evenings
  • Yoga
  • Picnics
  • Graduate Seminars
  • Formal exchange dinners with other college MCRs
  • BOPS (big organised parties).

The Committee is also there to welcome new students, support student needs and act as a point of advice and reference for all MCR members.
