Beginning in summer 2025, we will transform an underused and rundown hidden gem tucked away in the corner of College into one of our most beautiful, useful and well-loved spaces.  Our stunning new Music Room is going to become a special hub for the musical, artistic and intellectual life of College.

Architectural rendering of a wood-panneled room

The Pastry School sits in the corner of Chavasse Quad. The Music Room on its first floor is currently dilapidated, underused and entirely inaccessible to those requiring lift access. This building has the potential to become one of the most striking and well-loved spaces in College. With renovation and renewal, the Pastry School will now become an inspiring and accessible event space where both in-person and live-streamed events can be made available to more members of our community, as well as offering much-needed practice rooms for our student musicians and a Green Room for performers and speakers.

Priority 1: Accessibility

We will make the Music Room accessible via a footbridge connecting the Music Room to the Perrodo Building, which has a lift, enabling everyone to access the space.

Priority 2: Refurbishment

The complete renovation of the Pastry School building will bring out the full acoustic and aesthetic potential of the space. Redecorated and restored in the Arts and Craft style, with splendid acoustics and audio-visual equipment, the new Music Room on the first floor will hold up to 70 people, facilitating musical and artistic performances and high-profile gatherings and talks. Musical practice rooms will be added to the ground floor.

Timing

In June 2025, the Middle Common Room relocated to a fine new home in Thomas Hull House on New Inn Hall Street, enabling the full restoration of the Pastry School building. Work on the project is now underway and will be finished  by Spring 2026.
