St Peter’s College congratulates alumnus and Honorary Fellow Mark Carney (MPhil Economics, 1991), who was named the next Canadian Prime Minister in March 2025 and, as a result of the General Election in April, was confirmed for a further term.

Carney received his BA at Harvard University. At the University of Oxford, he pursued his MPhil in Economics at St Peter’s College from 1991 to 1993, followed by a DPhil in Economics at Nuffield College, which he completed in 1995.

Carney has established a notable career in the financial sector and, more recently as a leader both in national and international financial governance. He was Governor of the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013, and then Governor of the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020. In 2019, he was appointed a United Nations Special Envoy on Climate Change. He was made an Honorary Fellow of St Peter’s College in 2015.

On Sunday 9 March 2025, he was elected to the leadership of Canada’s Liberal Party. He will succeed Justin Trudeau, who has been Prime Minister of Canada since 2015. Shortly after taking office, Carney called a General Election, which took place on 28 April 2025 and confirmed him in the role of Prime Minister for a further term.

The Master of St Peter’s College, Professor Judith Buchanan, said,

‘On behalf of the St Peter’s College community, I congratulate our alumnus and Honorary Fellow Dr Mark Carney (MPhil Economics, 1991) on being elected as the next Prime Minister of Canada. His impressive record as Governor of the Bank of Canada, Governor of the Bank of England and a United Nations Special Envoy on Climate Change speaks for itself. Together, we warmly wish him well as he adds the weighty role of Prime Minister of Canada to his already distinguished career.’
