St Peter’s College is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Pierrick Bousseau as Fellow and Tutor in Mathematics. Dr Bousseau also joins the University of Oxford’s Mathematical Institute as an Associate Professor.

After completing undergraduate studies in mathematics and physics at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris, Dr Bousseau earned a PhD in mathematics from Imperial College London under the supervision of Richard Thomas. He subsequently held a postdoctoral position at ETH Zurich, followed by a research appointment with the CNRS at Université Paris-Saclay. Before joining Oxford, he spent three years as an Assistant Professor at the University of Georgia in the United States.

Dr Bousseau’s research is in algebraic geometry, a branch of mathematics that uses algebra to study shapes and spaces. He focuses on a field called enumerative geometry, which is about counting geometric objects that meet certain conditions—for example, how many curves of a given type pass through a set of points. He is also interested in how this area connects with other parts of mathematics and with ideas from theoretical physics. Recognition for his research includes the Swiss Map Innovator Prize 2020, Laureate of the Peccot Lecture 2021-2022, the Boris Dubrovin Medal 2024, and in 2025, he was awarded a Sloan Research Fellowship in Mathematics. You can view his CV here.

At St Peter’s, Dr Bousseau will be teaching tutorials for students taking Pure Mathematics courses. He joins Prof Lionel Mason (Mathematics) and Prof Geoff Nichols (Statistics), both Tutorial Fellows at St Peter’s College, as well Research Fellow Dr Hanqing Jin and a number of other colleagues lecturing in Mathematics and Statistics.
