Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Dr Vlad Mykhnenko has been a leading voice on the challenges facing Ukraine and how the global community might respond. Last week, Dr Mykhnenko presented expert evidence in Parliament at the Foreign Affairs Committee’s evidence session on recovery in Ukraine.
Applying his expertise to the situation impacting his country is a natural fit for Dr Mykhnenko, who is a Research Fellow in Sustainable Urban Development at St Peter’s College and Associate Professor of Sustainable Urban Development at the Department for Continuing Education at the University of Oxford. He has published extensively on comparative political economy, economic geography, and urban and regional economics in and beyond Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. He is the author of The Political Economy of Post-Communism: The Donbas and Upper Silesia in Transition (2011).
His recent activity has focused heavily on the causes and impact of the Russo-Ukrainian war, as well as on Ukraine’s eventual recovery. The University of Oxford has made available several articles featuring his expert commentary (see the end of this article for links). In March 2023, he joined a panel with former Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko (2005-2010) to discuss the current state of affairs and the future of Ukraine almost two decades after the Orange Revolution.
At the parliamentary evidence session, Dr Mykhnenko joined a panel alongside the former UK Ambassador to Ukraine, Simon Smith, and Former Minister of Finance, Natalie Jaresko. His expert witness statement focussed on the prospects for Ukraine's post-war economic reconstruction, growth, and prosperity, and the challenges ahead. He has made notes from his presentation available in an article on LinkedIn.
