St Peter’s College congratulates Rhonda Tse (Biochemistry, 2022) for representing Oxford University at the International Powerlifting Federation’s World University Powerlifting Cup, which took place in Slovenia in November 2023.

Rhonda, who is the women’s captain of Oxford University Powerlifting Club, won third place in the women’s under 52kg weight class, taking second place in the deadlift and third place in the bench press. These results helped secure a second-place ranking overall for Oxford, out of the 55 universities represented at the competition.

Powerlifting is a strength sport in which athletes attempt to lift as much weight as they can on three lifts: the squat, bench press, and deadlift. In a competition, the highest weight lifted for each movement is added together to form their total; the person with the highest total in their weight class wins. In this competition, Rhonda, who weighs 50.5kg, lifted 100kg in the squat, 67.5kg in the bench press, and 140kg in the deadlift. Impressively, Rhonda was also at least four years younger than everyone else in her weight class.

Rhonda loves the discipline involved in powerlifting and the strength it leads to. She said, ‘Few sports can give you the same concrete, quantifiable markers of improvement. It's something to chip away at that is entirely my own, and I can only credit — or blame — myself for the results I reap’.

Reflecting on the World University Powerlifting Cup, which is the highest level of competition she has participated in so far, Rhonda said, ‘A podium finish was my main goal and that is what we achieved — I'm happy with my results and am so grateful for the opportunity to represent Oxford internationally’.

The St Peter’s community warmly congratulates Rhonda for her achievements.
