Dr Jonathan Gammell

  • Stipendiary Lecturer in Engineering Science

I am a Stipendiary Lecturer at St Peter's and a Departmental Lecturer in Robotics in Engineering Science. I am Canadian and received my Ph.D. and M.A.Sc. from the University of Toronto in Aerospace Science and Engineering, and my B.A.Sc. from the University of Waterloo in Mechanical Engineering (Physics option).

I joined the Oxford Robotics Institute as a postdoctoral research associate in 2016 and then started my own research group as a lecturer there in 2018. I also joined St Peter's in 2018.


In college, I teach structures and dynamics with Prof Tom Adcock to first and second year students from St Peter's and Exeter colleges. In the department, I teach a third-year design course on multiagent robotic systems.


My research is focused on understanding and solving fundamental problems in robotics. I am especially interested in developing ways to estimate a robot's surroundings and plan around them. These problems are encountered in a lot of interesting robotic problems, including self-driving cars and drones.

I also do work in collaboration with NASA JPL for planetary rovers. I've been fortunate to deploy and test robots across the globe, including at Mauna Kea, Hawai`i, the Canadian Space Agency’s Mars Emulation Terrain, and Le Mans, France.
