  • Research Fellow in Economics
  • Islamic Centre Lecturer in Development Economics

I joined St Peter’s as a graduate student in 1999, and returned to it as a research fellow in 2008. Besides holding a joint appointment with the Oxford Department of International Development as a research lecturer, I am also the Globe Fellow in the Economies of Muslim Societies at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies and a Research Associate of the Oxford Centre for the Analysis of Resource-Rich Economies.

Having completed my doctorate in economics from Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar in 2004, my previous research affiliations have included: the Department of Economics, Oxford University (2004-05); Merton College (2002-03 and 2005-06); Center for International Development, Harvard University (2001), and Mahbub ul Haq Human Development Centre, Islamabad (1997-1999).

Teach

I teach on three graduate programmes: M.Phil in Development Studies, M.Phil in Modern Middle Eastern Studies, and the M.Sc. in Global Governance and Diplomacy. Apart from teaching and supervision on core courses, I also convene graduate options on: the political economy of institutions and development, and the political economy of the Middle East and North Africa. At St Peter’s I organize tutorials on quantitative economics for undergraduates reading for the PPE and E&M degrees.

Research

I am an empirical macroeconomist with a strong multi-disciplinary orientation. My research engages with questions of long-run development, political economy and economic history, focusing on Muslim societies, in particular.

Apart from some cross-country empirical work on development economics, I am trying to develop a broader research lens on the political economy of the Middle East. My recent contribution to the field was an article on “The Economics of the Arab Spring”, which received the Best Paper Award. It has now been translated into Arabic and several other languages, and formed the basis for a dedicated story in the Economist magazine. I have also successfully concluded an IFPRI project on “Structural Constraints to Public Goods Provision in Pakistan”.

I am a strong believer in the role of the public intellectual. In that spirit, I have engaged with a wider audience on my research by contributing op-ed pieces to The New York Times, Project Syndicate, Al-Jazeera, Huffington Post, and Foreign Policy Magazine.
