SPC student Desmond Asante honoured at diversity awards ceremony
Towards the end of last year, St Peter's student, Desmond Asante (Mathematics and Statistics, 2017), was honoured with an award as Champion for Social Mobility at the inaugural Student Social Mobility Awards ceremony, organised by the charity upReach.
His citation said: "Desmond moved to the UK from Ghana at the age of 10 and was raised by a single parent. His main passion is for volunteering, and he is the Access and Outreach officer for his College. He has set up Maths Societies in local schools and acted as a mentor for children in Hackney, as well as running workshops in Ghana. He is now setting up a mentoring programme for young black men from single-parent backgrounds."
The award ceremony was held in the House of Lords on 13 December 2018, where Desmond was accompanied by his tutor Balazs Szendroi. Before the ceremony, they were generously hosted by Lord Robin Hodgson, Trustee of the College, for tea and a tour of the Houses of Parliament.
