St Peter’s College is pleased to administer the Romilly Award Student Essay Prize, which promotes student engagement with the JWM Collection of Duncan Grant artworks at the College.
The JWM Collection at St Peter’s College is one of the largest private collections in the UK of works by the celebrated artist and designer Duncan Grant (1885–1978). The items are on long-term loan to the College by a generous alumnus. St Peter’s College is grateful to this alumnus for funding the Romilly Award Student Essay Prize (£1,000).
The winner of the Romilly prize is Florence Sykes, a second-year undergraduate student reading History of Art at Worcester College. Florence’s essay ‘A Table of One’s Own: A Response to the JWM Duncan Grant Collection at St Peter’s College’, considers Duncan Grant’s pencil sketch portrait of writer Virginia Woolf and Grant’s ability in his artworks to capture the female gaze of Woolf and her sister, artist Vanessa Bell.
The collection is open to public viewings for both individuals and groups. Learn more here.
