Ricardo Soares de Oliveira in The Economist
The research of Dr Ricardo Soares de Oliveira, Manika & Harjeev Kandhari Fellow in Politics at St Peter's, features in a prestigious leader article in the print version of The Economist, published earlier this month.
Dr Soares de Oliveira's book, Magnificent and Beggar Land: Angola since the Civil War, which was published in 2015, is cited in an article examining Angola's new President, João Lourenço, and his promise to tackle corruption in the country.
Angola, which is Africa’s second-largest oil producer, is considered by experts to be even more corrupt than Nigeria, which has long struggled with both the official and private misuse of funds and resources.
Ricardo is a leading expert on Angolan politics. His research has featured in a wide range of articles on the country and its corruption, which have appeared in publications from the New Yorker to the Financial Times.
His book, Magnificent and Beggar Land, was shortlisted for the African Studies Association of the UK Fage and Oliver Prize in 2016.
