Prof Hirschon wins Onassis Fellowship

Prof Renee Hirschon, Senior Research Fellow at St Peter's, has been awarded a prestigious Senior Visiting Fellowship by the Onassis Foundation for a period of research in Athens.

She will be taking up the grant in October 2016, and will collaborate with the Panteion University and the Centre for Asia Minor Studies, where she will offer a series of seminars.

Prof Hirschon's project is entitled Personal Celebrations, Time and the Internet: Processes of Modernisation in Contemporary Greece. The aim is to examine name day and birthday celebrations, the effect of social media (especially Facebook), and to chart the noticeable changes over the last 50 years.

The research will involve informal participant observation, interviews, and archival investigation which will produce the ethnographic data, with results being disseminated in scholarly articles and seminar presentations.
