LEONARD J. THEBERGE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Board of Directors of the St. Peter’s College Oxford Foundation has established a scholarship to be awarded annually for study at St. Peter’s College, Oxford, in honour of the late Leonard J Theberge. The Scholarship was made possible through donations from friends and family in his memory. Mr Theberge fulfilled a lifelong dream of attending St. Peter’s at age 31 after having practiced law for several years.
The Scholarship will assist other mature, qualified adults in returning to academia.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
In order to qualify an applicant must be
1. A citizen of the United States of America;
2. A graduate of a fully accredited college or university and possess at least a Bachelor of Arts degree or the equivalent; and
3. Accepted as a student by St Peter’s College. (N.B.: Applicants for graduate work must have been accepted by the appropriate Faculty or Department of the University before they can be offered College membership.)
As between candidates of equal academic merit, preference will be given to mature students aged over 30 and to those who have been in full-time employment for at least five years since graduation.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE AND AWARDING OF SCHOLARSHIP
The applicant must submit a written proposal to the Board of Directors of the St Peter’s College Oxford Foundation outlining a proposed course of study and reasons for selecting St Peter’s as well as a curriculum vitae and two letters of recommendation. Official application and supporting documents are not to be submitted by email. Applications should be submitted by 15 August.( In exceptional circumstances, applications will be accepted after the student’s arrival at St Peter’s College in October.) The Board will review all applications and vote to determine the winner, if any. The Board reserves the right to withhold award of the Scholarship if it does not judge any applicant to be deserving. All applicants will be notified of the Board’s decision on or about 1 October.
The amount of the award will represent a modest contribution towards maintenance and personal expenses during an academic year, and will be at the discretion of the Board of Directors of the Foundation. Past grants have been in the range of $750 to $1500 per academic year. Disbursement of the award money: one half will be sent immediately after the Foundation has received notification from the College Secretary that the student has duly matriculated; and one half will be sent on or about February 1 of the following year if the Scholarship recipient is still a student in good standing at St Peter’s College.
The award is for one year only. However, upon successful completion of the first two academic terms, the holder of the Scholarship may submit to the Board a new proposal along with evaluations by at least two Fellows of the College and/or academic supervisors, and a request that the Board consider an additional award for the next academic year. The application of the holder of the Scholarship will be considered along with other applications.
