New Writing Festival

9 January 2012

The New Writing Festival is an opportunity for student scriptwriters to have their work performed on stage in the Hilary term. Telegraph theatre critic Dominic Cavendish selected four winners, including 'Rubber Dinghy' by St Peter’s student Kelvin Fawdrey, which will be performed in rep at the Burton Taylor and judged by a professional theatre director (last year this was Greg Doran of the Royal Shakespeare Company, RSC).

Kelvin is a graduate student at St Peters studying MSt English 1800-1914, and 'Rubber Dinghy' is his second play to be performed at student level. It is a snap shot of the lives of David and Seth as they try to escape their past; two men, one dinghy and a vast ocean, is it possible to start over or best to end it all? The play will be directed by fellow student Benedict Cohen with auditions in the 1st week of Hilary. Previous plays selected in The New Writing Festival include Christopher Hampton’s first play, 'When Did You Last See My Mother', which was spotted in Oxford by industry professionals who transferred it to the West End. The rest is theatrical history.
